As we were saying, the wrestlers must lead very strict and disciplined lives, both inside the dohyo, and outside. The life of a rikishi is, in many ways, unusual. Once a winner is declared, the two wrestlers salute each other by bowing formally, and showing no emotion, after which the loser leaves, and the winner is crowned. The belief that salt has purifying powers stems from ancient Shinto times, and is used in sumo to chase bad spirits away, and designate the ring as a sacred space. Slapping and lunging at the opponent’s throat in a choking motion are allowed, however.Ī rikishi may exit the ring, retreating to his corner, but would have to re-purify it with salt upon re-entering. That being said, there are a few prohibitions, such as eye gouging, hair pulling, crotch grabbing, choking, or punching (with a closed fist). The first wrestler to touch the ground with any part of his body (except the soles of his feet), or to step outside the straw that lines the ring. Other than that, the rules themselves are simple. This is one of the many aspects that makes sumo wrestling such an exciting sport. On the other hand, a larger wrestler can subdue his opponent with his massive weight. A more slender sumo wrestler can dodge more easily, and use his smaller size for agility. In fact, sumo allows wrestlers of different sizes to compete, with the idea that each size has its pros and cons. First of all, there is no weight category in sumo, although it might seem like an obvious sport for such a delimitation. This move is a version of the DDT.The rules of sumo wrestling are interesting, though they may appear a tad unusual at first, especially for the Western eye. The wrestler then falls onto their back so that the opponent lands on his head while remaining vertical. Brainbuster: Performed by putting the opponent in a front facelock, hooking their pants or thigh, and lifting them up as if executing a vertical suplex.The standard version of the move sees the wrestling scoop their opponent horizontally before dropping to one knee, slamming the opponent's back on their other knee. Backbreaker: Performed by dropping an opponent so that the opponent's back impacts or is bent backwards against a part of the wrestler's body, usually the knee.Also known by several other names including cloverleaf leg-lace Boston crab, standing reverse figure-four leglock, and Scorpion Deathlock. Holding the opponent's legs in place, the wrestler then grabs the opponent's leg which he has crossed over the other and steps over him, flipping him over into a prone position before leaning back to compress his lower back. If the applier decides to cross the opponent's legs around his right leg, he has to cross the opponent's right leg over their left, or, otherwise, he has to cross his opponent's left leg over their right. Sharpshooter: Begins with the opponent supine on the mat with the applying wrestler stepping between the opponent's legs with their left leg and wraps the opponent's legs at shin level around that leg.Pin: A victory condition that is met by holding an opponent's shoulders or scapulae (shoulder blades) on the wrestling mat for a prescribed period of time.One or both arms are used to encircle the opponent's arm under the armpit, and secured at the opponent's neck. Nelson: Grappling hold, executed from behind the opponent, generally when both are on the mat face down with the opponent under the aggressor.The final position has the wrestler in a semi-sitting position and facing away from his opponent, with the opponent’s back and legs bent back toward his head. It is a type of spinal lock where the wrestler hooks each of the opponent’s legs in one of his arms, and then turns the opponent face-down, stepping over him in the process. Crab: Typically starts with one wrestler lying in a supine position on the mat, with the other wrestler standing and facing him.Combining moves can also be performed, using word elements to describe what kind of actions (movements) a move involves: The moves upon which these variations are based, are generally basic in nature.
